This week I’ve felt like a bit of a 007 secret agent.

If you know me, I love James Bond.

Our son loves to play spies, too.

But this week was different because we had 21 007 missions to complete.

Two bloggers, one in Austin and one in Salt Lake (me) competed for the week to complete 21 missions or tasks using the ISIS wallet

Today is Day 5 of the challenge and all week we’ve tried to go contactless, meaning we use our phone to pay and not other forms of payment.

Here’s my list of challenges:

<del>· Buy contactlessly at a drive-thru</del>

<del>· Buy groceries</del>

· Watch a movie at the movie theatre (all the movies are rated PG at the ISIS theater)

<del>· Add money to your phone credit</del>

· Pay for a hair cut

<del>· Social suggestion from one of your followers (tried to find a heated toilet seat)</del>

<del>· Buy flowers using NFC</del>

<del>· Go entirely contactless for a day</del>

· Send Gemalto a postcard

<del>· Pick up lunch</del>

<del>· Buy a book at the bookstore</del>

<del>· Buy music at a music store</del>

<del>· Grab a burrito</del>

<del>· Eat something sweet from a bakery</del>

<del>· Pick up some medicine at a pharmacy</del>

<del>· Buy sporting equipment</del>

· Buy gas (tried to do this but the gas station wasn’t ISIS enabled)

· Get something for the home from a do-it-yourself store (tried to do this but the Lace Place closed at 4:00 PM)

<del>· Redeem a coupon from your mobile wallet #1</del>

<del>· Redeem a coupon from your mobile wallet #2</del>

<del>· Invite followers to the kickoff meetup at Whole Foods to learn more about contactless payments and the mobile wallet and NFC technology. For every attendee, a bonus point is earned. For anyone who uses NFC to pay, another point is earned. </del>

We’ve done pretty well for the week.

Right now the points are:

There are three days left in the challenge; however, not sure that we’ll be able to get more points. The challenge goes through Sunday.

My problem today is that I’ve only got $15 left on my phone and have to get creative to solve the unfinished tasks.

Also, it’s my brother’s wedding reception is Saturday and we are focused on family Friday and Saturday.

Sunday we don’t shop because we try to keep it a holy day.

So, we’ll see Sunday how it all ends up.

The winning team will get $500 donated to their charity of choice, mine is SHOT AT LIFE. Five hundred dollars will immunize 25 children for life! We really want to win.

OVERVIEW OF THE CHALLENGE

Over all the challenge has proved to be a challenge, with hiccups along the way: my phone being shut down for security purposes, money not loading and finding ISIS enabled locations. It’s to be expected to have things go wrong, but I did start to get frustrated by day 3.

But with any challenge comes learning, I’ve learned a lot over this week about mobile payment technology and have been extremely impressed with the ISIS team in Salt Lake. They have gone ABOVE & BEYOND to support and help me resolve issues. One night while trying to purchase flowers with my daughter, I called Nate Stevens because it wasn’t working. So what did he do? He hopped in is car and drove 10 minutes at 9:30 at night to help me. That’s dedication.

I’ve also been able to go to local merchants that I didn’t know existed, like Olympus burger (where we ordered dinner at the drive thru and paid using a coupon, too!). Their food was really good (so good my son was putting rice pilaf on his corn dog).

The kids have been really good sports a long the way and gave them a quarter for every mission we completed. It’s also been a really hot week in Salt Lake but they have been good sports despite the heat. I bought them little bubble gum dispensers and some art supplies at Rite Aid.

Yesterday, we started the day with summer camp and Kindermusic and then I was on KSL for a little feature promoting the challenge. KSL ISIS WALLET.

After the news, I headed down to City Creek to make some purchases using ISIS. Facebook & Instagram friends helped me pick a pair of new running shoes.

Tried desperately to find a heated toilet seat, hot dog toaster or wolf shirt at Macy’s. Ended up with a batter bottle and a pocket hose.

Finding a book and music proved to be more of a challenge, but found these at the Chalk Garden at City Creek.

Last night we had an impressive turn out to the Sugar House Whole Foods

Thanks @redcherries22 for the awesome images.

Dessert was paid for by Isis at Whole Foods and lots of happy customers. We treated 119 people to dessert:

There are people in this world that see a need and act.

Instead of sitting by and talking about it, they take action.

Have you ever met one of these people? I had a surprise meeting in January.

At the Outdoor Retailer show in January, I met Erika.

Seattle Backpacker Magazine & Adventure Mom & Tales of A Mountain Mama

Erkia is on the left, I’m in the middle and Amelia Mayer (Tales of a Mountain Mama) is on the right.

She and her business partner run the online site Seattle Backpacker Magazine. The magazine is dedicated to providing Backpackers with the best information.

I was particiularly interested in learning more about what they were doing because we were heading to Seattle for my brother Mike’s wedding in May (lots to come on the wedding shortly).

Our appointment time was scheduled and we met outside of the media room.

The OR show was almost over and we were both pretty exhausted. We sat out in the hall, sitting side by side, with our backs agains the wall. Our feet were tired and our ears were ringing a little.

But what happened in the interview was a conversation that changed course.

You see, it was suppose to be about how they started their magazine, which I’ll share below, but what happened instead was two mothers talking about their loves for the outdoor and how an interview of her own, changed her life course.

Erika is a mother, journalist and photographer.

Seattle Backpackers Magazine was borne out of a love for the outdoors. They decided they wanted to share all the knowledge they had gained from their time outdoors and it seemed like the best medium to share it effectively. It was because of the magazine that she met AC SHERPA, the world-record-holding Sherpa climber who took her to Nepal on her first trip. She was interviewing him for the magazine: http://seattlebackpackersmagazine.com/seven-summits

I love how Erika describes herself:

“I am a mom who lives in the suburbs of Seattle. I live a pretty normal life in that vein. I run a business, I run kids to soccer, I run to the mountains to photograph and write about them. (And I just run, too.)

This is the part where the normal goes away. I ended up in Nepal, walking up a famous path called the Everest Highway, on a project designed to raise awareness and funds for global issues. During this project I lived in Nepal for a month with a handful of Nepalis, and a few Americans. And they weren’t normal. They were musicians and mountain climbers – extraordinary ones. And it wasn’t a normal trek. Some pretty extraordinary things happened along the way.

In short, I was inspired like I have never been inspired before.”

So, an interview lead to a trip to Nepal.

AC runs the nonprofit 7 Summits Foundation (7summitsfoundation.org) and it is his connections that have allowed them to volunteer effectively in Nepal. More info at their website. Much more work to be done. Beautiful way to see a developing country.

Personally, she blogs at HimalSong where she shares her journey of volunteering and learning lessons you can’t lean by staying in the comfort of home. After her first trip to Nepal, she wrote a book about her experience.

“To date I’ve been to Nepal twice, (one month each time) once for an environmental awareness tour (2011), and once for volunteering in schools with infrastructure and materials (this past spring). We donated 10 laptops and 10 Kindles to a school in remote a rural village, 10 hours walk (over 10,000 foot mountain ridges) from the nearest airport, to work with the people there.

I love to share what I’ve learned. I want more people to know about the far corners of the world, and know that they can go there and experience it, too. I give presentations in the Seattle area about my travel and photography. This coming weekend I’ll be at Gear Up Expo at Comcast Arena, in Everett, talking about cultural travel and photography.”

Erika is so inspiring because she saw a need and acted.

Erika’s mission is one of charity and love:

“We are a small group and don’t pretend that we will be erecting a building or re-arranging a village with our few hands. But our hopes are in some ways larger. Our focus is on education and medical assistance. Our basic premise is to empower the people and the children that we work with so that they can walk their own path with fewer roadblocks. We’ll spend some time getting into the communities, rallying the locals and engaging them in the work so that they will be invested in it once we’re gone. There are so many roadblocks in a country with so little infrastructure, such varied landscape and an unsettled government. But that offers us an opportunity to make change much more readily than elsewhere. Or one hopes, because there is so much to do. Broad strokes. With few hands. To develop empowerment and responsibility.”

The tour company she uses is a local and Nepal company - International Sherpa Guides (ISG).

The non-profit that I volunteer with (and am a member of the board) is 7 Summits Foundation (7SF) which is a local 501(c)3 in Redmond, WA.

The owner, lead guide of ISG is the president of 7SF, so they are they are the same guy – AC Sherpa.

Back in April, we introduced you to the Socially responsible laptop bags by ETHNOTEK . Today we’re sharing our Ethnotek Dep review.

This company is all about Global Motherhood. They employ women through out the world to weave their fabric and then they make the bags with these beautiful fabrics. Each bag is unique. I’m happy to share this company with you and host a giveaway, so that you too can be apart of this great company.

Over the last three weeks, I’ve been using their new Ethnotek Dep bag (using their Vietnam 6). This bag starts at $139. What I like about this bag is the beautiful design and how no two bags are a like.

The bright colors are sure to bring a smile to your face.

It fits my macbook pro and is perfect for on the go. I used to Friday night for a Shot at Life Gala planning meeting. The lap top fits perfectly. It has a shoulder strap and big handles that fits perfectly under the shoulder. The bag is big and is perfect for moms on the go. It easily fits diapers, wipes and snacks. With separate compartments for simple organizeing.

The bag is a natural conversation piece.

Below you will find some additional details about the work they’ve done.

Vietnam (Cham village) - Since our original visit in October 2011 we’ve employed villagers straight through to today, which has yielded 3,150 meters of fabric, that’s 9 eiffel towers stacked on top of each other. Yup!!! pretty proud of that one.

Indonesia (Candi Cetho) - Since our visit in November 2011 we’ve worked with Iwan and Teddy to produce 470 meters of fabric, that’s 5 statue of liberties stacked on top of each other.

India (Bhujodi-Gujarat) - Since our first visit to Bhuj during a bag design masterclass that I co-hosted in Feb 2011 in Pune we’ve worked with Shamji, Qasab to produce 600 meters, that’s the height of 6 Big Ben’s stacked on top of each other.

Guatemala (Chichicastenango) - The family that we work with is The Sic Tzunun family, Maria, Juan and Manuel. The organization that we partner with is Little Mango Imports owned by a Tribe member and based out of Boulder Colorado. Since first hooking up with little mango in October 2010 we’ve worked with the Sic Tzununs to produce 658 meters, that’s 20 meters higher than the Petronas towers!

Ghana (Ananse village) - Since hooking up with our friends/Tribe members at the Fair Trade Certified Ananse village and Senegalese trader in LA, we’ve commissioned 390 meters of Ltd. Edition fabric. That’s the empire state building.

Salt Lake City — Enphase Energy, Inc., and Sunlight Solar have completed a 68-kilowatt solar project on four UTA Airport TRAX stations from downtown North Temple to the Salt Lake City International Airport. Each station rooftop has 72 Enphase microinverters and generates enough power to fully operate all functions of the stop, including lighting, ticket machines and electrical outlets. The project is estimated to generate 90,000 kW hours of electricity annually.

“We are proud to partner with Sunlight Solar, and pleased to offer the Enphase Microinverter System to energize a light rail transit system supporting a major international airport,” said Paul Nahi, CEO of Enphase Energy. “Having provided our microinverter system to Sunlight Solar since 2008, we are excited to see Sunlight expand into commercial projects and look forward to participating in their future success.”

During the first week of operation, approximately 27,000 passengers boarded the Green Line extension that now ends at Salt Lake City International Airport, according to the Utah Transit Authority. Passengers at North Temple Bridge/Guadalupe, Jackson/Euclid, Fairpark and 1940 W. North Temple stations can observe total solar energy generation on 32-inch outdoor screens set to display the Enphase Enlighten monitoring website.

“We continue to choose the Enphase microinverter system for its performance, safety and monitoring software,” said Marc Staker, project manager at Sunlight Solar. “Safety was a primary concern for this project given the amount of passengers who will have access to the stations and having the AC come off the roof instead of high voltage DC lines was key in decreasing risk.”

Daily Challenges will take place for a week on an NFC quest in which they competed against each other to see who could be the most successful in going contactless.

{I’ll be honest, I had to wiki what NFC  means: ”Near field communication (NFC) is a set of standards for smartphonesand similar devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into close proximity, usually no more than a few centimeters. Present and anticipated applications include contactless transactions, data exchange, and simplified setup of more complex communications such as Wi-Fi.[1] Communication is also possible between an NFC device and an unpowered NFC chip, called a “tag”.[2])}

We’ll be blogging, tweeting and videoing our challenges daily.

I’m even getting fancy 1 on 1 training tomorrow on how to use the new technology and make purchases with the Isis phone.

So, let’s be honest. Why does this matter to you? Because we want show the nation what Salt Lake City is made of. That we are an amazing social media community and a tech savvy city/state.

I’m reading up on this as much as I can.

To say I’m a little intimidated is an understatement.

I’m a “mom blogger”.

I write about family adventures.

Not tech guru wizard skills.

But I am uber competitive.

And have REALLY smart, funny, supportive friends.

So, here’s the thing… I”m going to need A LOT of help from YOU!

We can crowd source and am <del>asking</del> begging you for support…oh and there will be incentives for helping me too along the way :)
